Snoring and Sleep Apnoea

There are very few people that don’t know what snoring is, but sleep apnoea is a more serious version of snoring.

People snore, because when they are asleep, the muscles in the back of the throat relax and the airway closes up slightly.

Then when we breath the tissue in the narrower airway vibrates causing the noise you hear.

If the airway closes too much when you breath in, you completely shut the airway off and because of air pressure differences, you actually stop breathing, this is now Apnoea.

Apnoea is most common during sleep, hence why its called Sleep Apnoea, and this is a very serious medical condition that must be dealt with.

The most common symptom is daytime sleepiness, fatigue and tiredness, poor concentration, irritability and mood changes,

and some may have other symptoms.

CPAP Machine

Dental Dorsal Appliance

The treatment for this,  is to first have a Sleep study, which can be organized by your doctor. Once this is done and assess by a Specialist Sleep Physician, you will have a category rating from 0-3.

Generally ‘0’ is no apnoea but snoring, ‘1’mild, ‘2’moderate and ‘3’ severe.

So what do dentists have to do with this. The most common treatment for categories 2 & 3 is a CPAP machine.

CPAP is a Continuous Positive Air Pressure machine that literally blows air into your mouth to keep your airways open.

But if you are in category 0 or 1, a Dental Appliance will work very well in eliminating your problem, so speak to us about this if you think this may be affecting you.
